Debt Validation Letter Generator — Track Your 30-Day Deadline & Escalate to CFPB

Just heard from a debt collector? Generate a free, FDCPA §809-worded debt validation letter for each collector, watch your 30-day statutory response window count down, and get a ready CFPB complaint pre-fill the moment a collector fails to validate.

Prototype — not legal advice. This tool does not create an attorney-client relationship and does not submit anything to a collector, court, or agency on your behalf. All data stays in your browser for this session only.

Direct answer

What is the 30-day debt validation window?

Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA §809, 15 U.S.C. § 1692g), a consumer who is contacted by a debt collector has the right to request written validation of the debt within 30 days of that first contact. If you send a validation request in that window, the collector must stop most collection activity until it provides that validation. If the deadline passes without a compliant response, you gain grounds to file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

Before the interactive generator

Use this manual checklist even without JavaScript

What to gather before you write your letter

  • The exact name of the collector or agency that contacted you.
  • The date they first contacted you — your 30-day window starts here.
  • The amount they say you owe, if stated.
  • Any account or reference number included in their notice.

State clearly in writing that you are requesting validation under 15 U.S.C. § 1692g, and send it by a method that gives you proof of the date sent — certified mail with return receipt is standard. Confirm current FDCPA text and CFPB guidance before relying on this checklist for a time-sensitive deadline.

Interactive flow

Generate your letter, then track the deadline

Enter one or more debts, get a validation letter and a 30-day countdown for each, and — if a deadline lapses — a CFPB complaint pre-fill appears automatically for that debt.

  1. Add your debt details
Collector name and first-contact date are required; alleged amount and account reference are optional.
  2. Get your letter and deadline
Each debt gets its own FDCPA §809-worded letter, a copy/print action, and a days-remaining badge.
  3. Escalate if the deadline lapses
Once a deadline passes (or you mark a collector as non-compliant), a CFPB complaint pre-fill and a link to file at consumerfinance.gov appear for that debt.

Capabilities

What this tool does and doesn't do

It does
  • Generates an FDCPA §809-worded validation letter per collector
  • Tracks each debt's 30-day statutory deadline automatically
  • Pre-fills a CFPB complaint once a deadline lapses without validation
  • Keeps every entry in your browser only, for the current session
It does not
  • Send your letter or file your complaint for you
  • Provide legal advice or evaluate whether the debt is valid
  • Store your data, require an account, or charge for the letter
  • Replace an attorney for disputed debts or active litigation

Common questions

Scope, legal advice, and privacy

Is this an official CFPB or government tool?

No. This is an independent prototype. It generates a letter you send yourself and a complaint pre-fill you copy into CFPB's own complaint form at consumerfinance.gov — it never submits anything to the collector, a court, or a federal agency on your behalf.

Is this legal advice?

No. This tool is a prototype that provides a general FDCPA §809 letter template and deadline math. It is not legal advice, does not create an attorney-client relationship, and does not evaluate the merits of your specific debt. If the debt is disputed, large, or you are already in litigation, consult a licensed attorney.

Will my information be saved anywhere?

No. The generator runs entirely in your browser. What you type exists only in this page's memory for the current session and is cleared when you refresh or close the tab — nothing is uploaded or sent to a server.

What happens after the 30-day deadline passes?

If a collector does not provide compliant written validation within 30 days of first contacting you, this tool reveals a pre-filled CFPB complaint you can copy into the official complaint form at consumerfinance.gov, along with a plain-language explanation of what that means.

Do I need to mail the letter myself?

Yes. This tool generates the letter text for you to copy or print, but you are responsible for sending it — most consumers use certified mail with a return receipt so they have proof of the date it was sent.

Sources and methodology

Trace every deadline and disclosure to a published source

The 30-day validation window and the letter's requested disclosures trace to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1692g (FDCPA §809). The deadline is computed with deterministic date arithmetic — first-contact date plus 30 calendar days — not an estimate or an LLM output. The CFPB complaint pre-fill points to CFPB's own official complaint process rather than an internal submission path.

Sources and last reviewed: 2026-08-25. Legal review pending — the letter template and CFPB pre-fill logic require review by a licensed attorney before that label may be removed. Debt collection rules can change; confirm current FDCPA text and CFPB guidance before relying on a time-sensitive deadline.

Search evidence recorded in the frozen research: United States keyword "debt validation letter template," SiteData volume band MoreThanOneThousand, exact KD 8, measured 2026-08-03 (see research.md). Competitive gap: existing free generators (AI Formatter, GetOutOfDebt.org, Nolo, Hyslip Legal) offer one-shot letter templates only, with no multi-creditor deadline tracking or escalation packet.
